Admit it – you’re already dreaming about spring.
The warm sun on your face. The fresh air greeting you at the door. The gorgeous greenery that takes your breath away.
It sounds nice, doesn’t it?
But when you’re bundled up in more layers than you can count and gearing up for another snowfall, those warm weather days seem too far away to even think about.
Well, we’re here to tell you to keep on dreaming! Because when spring comes, you’re going to be ready.
Don’t put off your backyard maintenance and planning until warmer days arrive. If you want to show off a stunning landscape this year, use these colder days to your advantage. Get a head start on your yard with the tips below.
Clean up and cut back
Before the real work can begin, you’ve got to get your space ready for what’s to come.
Take a look at your yard. The winds and harsh temperatures from cold-weather storms can really do some damage over the season. See where your eye pulls you in and think about what you’ll need to do to undo the mess left from winter’s destructive activity.
See all that debris? Get on your work gloves and gently remove leaves and sticks until you uncover your new foundation. Pull up the weeds around the area, too.
Next, go through your tools and see if anything needs replacing. Chances are your pruning shears need sharpening and your shovels deserve a serious scrub down. Clean out large and small gardening pots with a diluted bleach and water solution. Scrub them down with a brush so your new season’s plants are off to a healthy start.
If you have a crepe myrtle, potentilla, or a butterfly bush, this is the time to prune it! If you have a fruit tree and look forward to apples, pears, or peaches during the year, you’ll want to prune these during the midwinter season. After pruning a problematic shrub, dip your shears in a solution of bleach and water to prevent transferring disease from one plant to another.
Imagine the possibilities
You have big hopes for your outside space. We get it.
Sure, you could do what you did last year. You planted a few flowers here and there. There’s that one rose bush you put in, but you’d really love to have a few more this season.
But what if you went even further?
Go on and let your mind wander. Scan the area and let your imagination run wild. Think about what you really want to do this spring.
Maybe that includes a cascading waterfall that soothes your guests during an intimate summer evening. You’ve always wondered what your patio would look like with a fireplace. And with some nice outdoor lighting, it wouldn’t matter if an afternoon barbecue with friends and family went far into the night.
It’s easy to put off these big ideas into the “maybe one day” corner of our lives – especially when we’re busy and overwhelmed with life. But you don’t have to do it alone. With a quality landscaper by your side, you’ll have exactly what you need to create the landscape you’ve always wanted.
Gather pictures that make you swoon when you think about them implemented in your own backyard. Create an inspiration board on Pinterest and pin images that resonate with your outdoor style. When you meet with a professional landscaper, you’ll have a better idea about what you’d like to discuss during your consultation.
Get someone on your side
Creating the landscape you really want takes work – a lot of quality work.

With a true expert by your side, you can relax and let them take care of everything. Pretty soon you’ll be relaxing in a lounge chair, enjoying the backyard of your dreams.
